What’s Covered

What Breakdown Recovery Covers

Most breakdown recoveries fall into at least one of three situations:

It can’t be driven

The engine won’t run, the electrics have failed, it’s run out of fuel or the mechanical fault is serious enough that the vehicle simply won’t move under its own power.

It can’t be driven safely

It could technically move, but doing so would cause further damage or create a road safety risk.

It’s stuck

The vehicle can’t get out of its current position without help — mud, snow, a ditch, locked in gear, dead-locked in a space with no room to manoeuvre.

Once we’re with you, recovery usually has two stages — though not every job uses both. If the vehicle can be loaded directly, we do that. If it can’t be reached or repositioned from where it is, we extract it first — winching it clear, using our Eastract tracked unit for tight or locked situations, or crane-lifting where the vehicle needs to be lifted clear rather than pulled — an overturned vehicle or one down an embankment, for example. Once it’s clear and positioned, we load it onto a flatbed and transport it to wherever you need it to go.

Common Scenarios

Whatever the Situation

Broken Down Where You Are

Won’t start at home or on your driveway → we come to you; often a flat battery, especially on cold mornings — a jump start on the spot; loaded if that doesn’t fix it
Broken down at work or in a car park → we recover from office car parks, supermarket car parks and retail parks; tell us the access situation when you call
Hard shoulder or live lane → priority dispatch; stay behind the barrier and keep hazards on until we arrive
Overheating or coolant loss → loaded rather than driven further — continuing causes serious engine damage
Minor collision and unsure whether it’s safe to drive → we’ll assess and recover if needed; see Accident Recovery for collision-specific recovery

Stuck and Can’t Get Free

Stuck in mud or snow → winched clear; our Eastract tracked unit if the wheels can’t turn at all
Off the road in a ditch → winched or crane-lifted depending on the situation; tell us what’s happened when you call
Stuck in gear or dead-locked → our Eastract unit handles this where a standard truck can’t
Multi-storey or tight access → Eastract dispatched, or we confirm access before the truck sets off

Loaded for Transport, Not Towed

Electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs & hybrids) → towing wheels-down can back-feed voltage through the motor, damaging it and electronics; we always load these onto a flatbed
Automatic, dual-clutch or AWD/4×4 → towing with the engine off risks serious drivetrain damage; flatbed loading protects the transmission
Modified, lowered or low-clearance → our SLA flatbed loads at an ultra-low angle, no scraping or underside strain
Flood or water-damaged → water in the engine or electrics means any movement risks further damage; we load carefully without disturbing the vehicle
The Process

How It Works

On arrival, our truck positions well back from your vehicle, angled to shield the work area, before anyone gets out.

1

Call us

Tell us where you are and what’s happened.

2

We dispatch

Nearest available truck — average 40 minutes, max 60 within our coverage area.

3

On-scene safety check

We assess whether your vehicle can be repaired at the roadside before recovering it; if a jump start or quick fix will get you moving, we’ll try that first.

4

We load

If recovery is needed, we load wherever the vehicle allows it.

5

Delivered

Home, a garage, our storage, or wherever you need to be. You’re welcome to ride along.

Drop-Off Options

Where Your Vehicle Goes

Once loaded, your vehicle goes wherever you need it. Most people choose one of four options: home, so you can sort a repair in your own time; straight to a garage or dealership if you already know where it’s going; our secure storage facility if you need somewhere safe while you arrange repairs or collection; or another location entirely — a bodyshop, an auction site, a family member’s address.

You’re welcome to ride in the cab with us. If you need to make your own way, that’s fine too — just let us know where the vehicle is going and we’ll confirm delivery once it’s done.

If you’re not sure yet where you want the vehicle to go when you call, that’s not a problem. Tell us your location and we’ll get the truck moving — you can confirm the drop-off destination while we’re on the way.

Stay Safe

While You’re Waiting

If you’re on a motorway hard shoulder: stay behind the barrier if there is one, keep your hazards on, and don’t put out a warning triangle — it’s genuinely more dangerous to be out on the carriageway doing that than to just wait safely.

If you’re on a quieter road: a triangle around 45 metres back and your hazard lights are the right call. Either way, if anyone’s hurt, call 999 first.

We’ll keep you updated on our ETA so you’re not left wondering. If your situation changes while you’re waiting — the car rolls, someone’s injured, you feel unsafe — call us back straight away.

Common Questions

FAQs

What’s the Difference Between a Towing Service and Breakdown Recovery?

Not much in practice — “towing service” and “tow truck” are everyday terms for the same thing we do. Whether you search for a breakdown recovery, car recovery, or towing service in Bolton, you’re looking for the same service: someone to get your vehicle moving or transport it safely. The difference is in how we move your vehicle — we load onto a flatbed wherever possible rather than towing on wheels, which protects your vehicle’s drivetrain. Call us whatever you want to call it.

Can You Recover More Than One Vehicle at a Time?

Yes — depending on the situation we’ll send multiple trucks or use towing equipment to move both vehicles together. Tell us when you call and we’ll arrange the right approach.

Do I Need to Be a Member?

No — call us direct with no membership. If you’re with the AA or RAC, we’re also on their dispatch networks, so you can use your club or call us direct — either works.

How Much Does Breakdown Recovery Cost?

We don’t charge a call-out fee — you only pay for the recovery itself. We give you a clear, upfront price before we dispatch, so you know exactly what you’ll pay before the truck leaves. The cost depends on your location, the type of vehicle, and where it needs to go. Call us for an instant quote — we’ll give you a price there and then.

How Long Will You Take to Get to Me?

Within our coverage area, average arrival is around 40 minutes, up to 60 minutes at the far edge. We’ll keep you updated so you’re not left wondering.
